Five Crazy Things: Mood Music

While the cats are away, Day 2: Welcome, Dawn!

Dawn: Before we get started here, I’d like to thank Barb and Deb for asking me if I’d like to write something while they were going to be away. I was thrilled they asked, they were thrilled I said yes. Here’s the result of the thrilling love-fest:

A lot of the Olympic athletes have been shown listening to iPods in between races or meets or whatever. Does anyone else here wonder what they’re listening to, or why? Does it relax them? Does it motivate them? Does it annoy the crap out of them and give them something stupid to distract themselves with while waiting around for their turn? It could be any or all of the above. Point is, it's obviously doing SOMETHING for them.

What 5 songs motivate you? Pick you up when you’re down? Just make you jump up and dance?

I also call this list “Five songs I never skip over when they come up on the iPod or radio.”

1. “Come Sail Away” by Styx (1977).  I discovered Styx in high school. One of the songwriters, Dennis DeYoung, is damn good at putting how I feel into words with fantastic music. This is definitely one of his best. (Plus, piano!)
2. “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey.  Journey’s “Escape” and Foreigner’s “4” albums were the first true rock BAND albums I owned. (Before that, it was all K-tel.) This song is what got me singing into a lipstick-tube microphone for the first time. (And it has piano!)
3. “Freeze Frame” by J. Geils. Poppy, funky, pointless FUN. The video was fun. (Anyone remember a bunch of guys in white overalls throwing paint splats all over a white set?) The beat is fun, and it makes my mood FUN. I love it love it love it.
4. “Walking in Memphis” by Mark Cohn. This is the song I believe I sing better than any other song. Best listened to in the car by myself. ;) (And, more piano!)
5. “It Don’t Make Sense (You Can’t Make Peace)” by Styx (2006). Dennis DeYoung and the rest of Styx “divorced” in 1999. The recreated Styx covered, and seriously reworked, this song and turned it into something whose funky sound is stuck firmly in my head.

Okay? Ready, set, go!

Barbara: Oooh, I love this topic, Dawn, because a) I wondered the same thing about the athletes, and b) I definitely have specific mood music.
1. “Song 2” by Blur, for getting motivated (cliché, I know, but it was my gear-up song waaaay before the sports arenas adopted it).
2. “Bohemian Like You” by the Dandy Warhols. This song just makes me feel happy and good and ready for anything.
3. “Wolf Like Me” by TV on the Radio. For power. Oooh, yeah.
4. “Cosmic Love” by Florence and the Machine. For working. For uplifting. Ready for everything/anything. “I Will Wait”, a new song by Mumford & Sons, is doing it for me in this regard too.
5. “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails. For feeling sorry for myself. Which sometimes hurts so good. Johnny Cash’s version works too.

  1. Oh man...this is SO HARD!!!!!!! lol. I have such a wide variety of music on my iPod. So here's a rough idea:

    1. anything I have from the Lord of the Rings soundtrack. BEAUTIFUL music! :D
    2. "Can't Stop Loving You" by Phil Collins. Such a sweet song. I've listened to it over 200 times!
    3. "No Not One" by Brandon Heath. Good music, good message about God and His love.
    4. "Little is Much" by a little known band called downhere. Just look up the words!
    5. "Hold Me" by Jamie Grace. A cute-as-can-be CCM singer who is just adorable. A fun dancy song!
    6. anything by Bebo Norman. LOVE his voice, his calm melodies.

    There's a lot more too! :D

    1. When I had the idea for this list, I was wondering how many songs/artists I'd learn about. I do recognize Phil Collins, and the LOTR, though I've never listened to it. This will be fun!

      Delete
    2. Also love the LOTR soundtrack! My favorite songs from that are "The Passing of the Elves" in Fellowship, "Last March of the Ents" in Two Towers, "The Battle of the Pelennor Fields" in Return of the King, and my most favorite is "The Lighting of the Beacons" in ROTK.

    3. Dawn, it's funny you should mentioning wondering about songs you'd find. As I'm reading through everyone's list, I find myself rummaging around on YouTube checking out tunes. :)

  2. This is a tough one for me. I have a variety of music that I love - and it depends on what I'm trying to get accomplished.

    1. The soundtracks from "Spamalot", "Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog" and "Hairspray" - I find them great for highway driving. Singing along while the kilometers go by ... :)

    2. "Stayin' Alive", "Shadow Dancing" and the peppy stuff from The Bee Gees - gives a spring to my step, and brings a smile to my face because it reminds me of my dad...

    3. "Blow" by Ke$ha - whenever I hear that song, I am reminded of when I drove out to the casino to buy tickets for the Two Man Group show - with Colin and Brad. :)

    4. Anything with a good beat - it's great to get the housework done - artists like Flo Rida, Pitbull, Eminem (some songs).

    5. Karrnnel - he is an amazing fiddle player, and that music relaxes me (and again, reminds me of dad, but I'm weird).

    6. "Nobody Knows Me" by Lyle Lovett and "Cry (If You Want To)" by the Holly Cole Trio - that's for those time I need to wallow in my pit of self-despair...

That's just a wee bit of a taste...

I find that when I hear a particular song, it transports me back in time to a particular moment and I feel what I felt then.

  3. I have never had a love for music and therefore this challenge is impossible for me. I don't use an Ipod even though mine is loaded with songs. I rarely if ever listen to music. A part of my brain never well developed I'm afraid. I am stuck back int he Oldies but Goodies era.

  4. Oh, this is a hard one. Let's see...
    1. "Home" sang by Michael Buble. Sad and beautiful. Really fits those down days.
    2. "Take On Me" by Aha. One of those songs that makes me smile and laugh. Love the music video too.
    3. Anything Maroon 5. Gets me ready for a long day or helps me unwind after a long day.
    4. "8 Days a Week" by the Beatles. Need I explain?!
    5. "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye. My newest favorite song. It is so different from a lot of the music on the radio today. Love it.
Wow, this took me longer than I thought it would.

  6. Mmmm, how do I choose just 5?

    1. "So Happy Together" by The Turtles
    2. "Door Into Summer" by The Monkees
    3. "Eleanor Rigby" by The Beatles (or pretty much any Beatle song from the Revolver Album)
    4. "Seperation" (a song from a computer game) by Jeremey Soule
    5. "From Western Woods to Beaversdam" by Harry Gregson Williams from the Chronicales of Narnia soundtrack

I love quiet soundtrack music. I found computer games like World of Warcraft and Elderscrolls have beautiful music. I don't play the games, but have discovered that these big game companies hire excellent composers for their games. If the music is bad, no one will play the games and they will loose their business, so they have fantastic soundtrack music. Jeremy Soule is one of the best composers.

    2. I never would have thought video games had music, never mind decent music. I grew up in the age of Pong and Pac-man. Their soundtracks go "blip blip blip." Not exactly something you'd want to dance to. :)
I like those Monkees and Turtles songs, too. (Hey! A zoo! LOL)

    3. These new online games like World of Warcraft are huge money makers. I guess they don't want to loose paying players because the music or background noise is annoying. Hire an orchestra!

    2)I'm yours, Jason Mraz
    3)One Great City, The Weakerthans
4)What Makes You Beautiful, One Direction

Oh. Oh. I just love this place.

I loved reading through everyone's list, and am already excited for coming home tonight and curling up in bed and hunting down all the one's I don't know, and re-listening to the one's I do know with through the emotional head space of someone else. I may even have to pause Mrs. Fletcher for a night!

here are mine (it's so hard to choose five!):

    1) Mein Herr; From 'Cabaret', sung by Liza Minelli- for when I've been drinking (alone) and feel sassy and want something to belt out along to. Fyi, I'm a terrible singer...

    2) Blood Bank; Bon Iver- when I feel lonely or alone, and...endless. It used to make me cry, but now it's almost like listening to it let's it cry for me.

3)B.O.B; Outkast- when I'm starting to slow down during a run, or when I want to sprint like mad for last stretch of it. The intro of it never fails to make my muscles MOVE. It's also great for when you're driving along a dead highway. But. Do so at you're own risk of speeding tickets...

4)Don't Forget Me (Live at Slane Castle version); Red Hot Chili Peppers- for when I want to be transported

5)You've Got The Love; Florence and the Machine- despite it sounding cheesy...for when I feel full of love, or need to remind myself how full of love I am. It always makes me feel uplifted.

    *bonus track:
El Carretero; Barrio Cubano de Ronald Rubinel- For when I want to dance, exactly the way my body wants to dance.

    1. Those sound like they immediately set moods for you! LOVE the Liza Minelli choice. I love "All That Jazz" for sassy attitude.
If cheesy works for you, go for it! Barry Manilow is one of my favorite artists. His songs are nothing if not cheesy sometimes, but still great to listen to. :)

    3. Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da: The Beatles. So random but I LOVE IT.

    4. I have an instrumental playlist on Spotify. Mostly hymns. I usually listen to it to wind down at night. Lovely batch of tunes :]

    5. Into the West-Annie Lennox. BEAUTIFUL song. Played at the end of LOTR. I love the words; so powerful and signifying the end of a long journey.

I have many many more "mood tunes" but these are the first few that came to mind and for the sake of time and space I won't include anymore...unless I think of more :]

  19. #7

Wide Awake by Katy Perry: I never, ever thought I'd like a Katy Perry song, but this is a recent addition to my favorite songs list. I like the lyrics a lot. It's a put-starch-in-my-backbone song.

Bella Bellisima by by Hadag Nahash: the story in English of the lyrics in Hebrew -- you'll just have to read for yourselves. I can't do it justice. The song is written about a true story.
    The song and translation:

  20. I could go on all day about music. My world is full of it- what I hear on the radio, what I hear in movies and on tv, and of course the beatuiful world of classical music that is both an absolute joy and my savior. But I will, as Dawn suggested, keep my list down to those songs that make me jump up and dance:

    1) Don't Stop Believin' - Journey

    2) More Than a Feeling - Boston

    3) Tubthumping - Chumbawumba

    4) Istanbul - They Might Be Giants

    5) Beyond the Sea - Bobby Darin

    6) Diner - Martin Sexton

    7) Tipitina - Hugh Laurie

    8) Light and Day - The Polyphonic Spree

    9) Say Hey - Michael Franti

    10) Wonderful Night - Fatboy Slim

    11) If I Had $1,000,000 - Barenaked Ladies

(Sorry, I just couldn't cut that list down to 5 songs...)

    1. Tipitina!!!!!!!!!! There ARE more fans out there!! Hugh did a fantastic album, didn't he? Between "Tipitina" and "Swanee River," I'm a happy person.

Btw, they didn't HAVE to be happy dance songs, just meaningful, but I'm so excited Hugh made it in there! (Can you tell?)

    2. And I'm excited that you were excited! He made a sensational album, and there isn't a song on that album that I don't absolutely adore! So happy to come across another Hugh fan... *hugs*

And I know they didn't all have to be happy, dancey songs. But I was in an awful mood yesterday, and the more happy songs I thought of, the better my mood got, so I went with it. Hooray for music!!!

  21. Oh, this is so difficult. I LOVE listening to music, of all kinds. It helps me in so many ways. Okay, off the top of my head, I'll go with:

    1. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen - I can't not sing this at the top of my voice.
    2. Dancing Queen by Abba. This is my get up and dance song. I always get the kids to join in, too. :)
    3. Anything by Josh Groban, but particularly Remember When It Rained and To Where You Are. He always manages to make me feel sad and comforted at the same time.
    4. Angels by Robbie Williams - a great, uplifting song.
    5. Imagine by John Lennon. An inspirational song, and one which always brings back childhood memories.

I know I've forgotten a whole load of great ones, but I could go on all day!

  22. Hey beauties! Thank you, Dawn, for posting this awesome topic -- like everyone here, I loved reading about other people's favourite music (and why). My music tastes change too, depending on the timing (I think Erin said that), but today I still like my list - if I have only 5 to choose from :) .

PS, Dawn, the day I got your post, I was shopping for some stuff for the trip and there was music playing in the background and I didn't even notice it -- until Walking in Memphis came on and I just totally smiled and felt great, and then realized it was because it was on your list! Thanks for this! (oh, and PPS, Deb got a migraine the night she was going to respond to the posts, so, even though she knew exactly what she was going to say to this one, she got derailed by the pain. Thankfully, she recovered after a few hours at the farm and was perfect the rest of the trip.)

    1. Timing is everything, even and especially for music!

I'm so glad Deb felt better as time went on. That would be a miserable way to spend a girls' away vacation. Or any vacation, really.

  23. Haven't said this before...but I love the idea of you guys writing, while Deb and Barbara are away! Thank you so much! *huuuugs*

I love music! I cannot live without music. And I love so many songs that this will be very hard to decide...*sighs*

    1. Fix You - Coldplay (ok...this song makes me cry every time I hear it...so maybe it's not the best motivating song, but it's one of my favourites)

    2. Krieger des Lichts - Silbermond (that's a German band, song's name is: Warriors of Light. The song's message: Never give up!)

    3. Was wir alleine nicht schaffen - Xavier Naidoo (another German artist, song's name is: What we can't manage alone. It's a song about team spirit, and also religious)

    4. basically every Take That song (this is my favourite band, and always will be. I love them sooooooooo much, and I can listen to all of their songs without getting tired of them. Sorry, I can't choose!)

    5. Given Up - Linkin Park (all right...that's not a good mood song, either...but sometimes I love to listen to it very loudly, and scream with the singer so much it hurts. Makes me feel better :P - oh and the lyrics describe my life)

As I said I love soooooo many songs, these are just some by my favourite artists :)
