Five Crazy Things: Starring Roles

Barbara: What five movie roles could you or would you like to imagine yourself in? (Please keep in mind that my own list is really hindered by the fact that I don’t have a great memory for the details in films I’ve seen, so I can’t riff off a nicely subtle but comprehensive list for you—I’m hoping Deb does that :-) )

1. Ripley in Alien. Not for the aliens, mind you, but for her fierce badass fearlessness.
2. Tracy Lord in The Philadelphia Story. What I remember most about this film is Katherine Hepburn’s intelligent self-examination.
3. Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. Because, well, who wouldn’t want to be (aka: look like) Audrey Hepburn in their fantasies? And there’s nothing like a transformational story where you get to keep all the best stuff from the before and after.
4. Erica Barry in Something’s Gotta Give. (Yeah, that would be the Diane Keaton character.) So many reasons for this one: she gets to go through a complete existential transformation in a most liberating, cathartic way AND she gets to do it in the most perfectly beautiful Cape Cod beach house I’ve EVER SEEN!
5. Erin Brockovich in Erin Brockovich. I don’t care about her boobs or her hair, it’s her unflinching attack on the bad and the wrong and her tireless against-all-odds defense of the underdog and what’s right.

Deb:
1. Any of Doris Day's roles in The Thrill of it All, Lover Come Back, Pillow Talk, et al. I would love to be sexy and charming and funny and work with those gorgeous brilliant men!
2.  Jane Craig: the role played by Holly Hunter in Broadcast News. Great great role! Smart, funny, neurotic!
3. Nora Charles played by Merna Loy in the Thin Man movies: loving wife, dog lover, mystery solver, wit extraordinaire.
4. Hildy Johnson played by the great Roz Russel in His Girl Friday—again, smart sassy, witty.
5. Kim Macafie played by the sexy and brilliant Ann Margaret in Bye Bye Birdie—need I say why?

  1. Hmm...

    1. Arwen from LOTR, just because I always wanted to be an elf. ;D
    2. Jane from Mr & Mrs Smith, for the kick-ass role.
    3. Christine from The Phantom of the Opera. It's by far my favourite musical, and I'd love to sing the songs!
    4. Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice. So romantic... *swoons*
    5. Can I cheat and say a TV show for my last? Because I'd love to be Buffy. (I know there was a film to start with, but it was awful!)

  4. How much can we let our imagination's go and defy reality here? Do we have to stay with female characters? What if some of our favorite roles ever were male?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Great choices gals! I think our generation gap is showing though! ;-) Rigel you can do whatever you want. I think we were thinking female characters as playing a male character is a whole new five crazy things! But go for it!!!

    ReplyDelete

    1. OK, I'll wait for the crazy things about male roles.

Of course, I'm sitting here getting annoyed that the by far majority of rocking awesome roles I like are male roles. Not enough opportunities for rocking awesome women. :P

      Delete
    2. There's definitely a generation gap going on here. I've read through several lists here and either haven't seen the movies or just flat out have never HEARD of the actress. I'm sure the kiddies won't have heard of some of mine, either. :)

  6. Debra Winger in An Officer and a Gentleman
    Jane Fonda in Coming Home
Ruth Gordon in Harold and Maude
    Woody Allen in Bananas
The women in Look Who's Coming to Dinner
Scout in To Kill a Mocking Bird

  7. Ooo, Barbara and Deb, my brain's gonna be having fun with this one all day!

    But, to begin -

    Female Movie Roles:

    1. Jordan (Michelle Meyrink's character) in Real Genius because I love, love, love, love, love, love, love that movie so very, very much. And, Jordan is my favorite character in the movie! And, because my best friend at university would lovingly tease me and call me Jordan sometimes because when I was a 17-19 year old freshman/sophomore, I was kind of like her. (I've mellowed over the years.) Andy (who, to this day, loves the movie as much as I do) meant it as a compliment, and I took it as such! :) I WISH I could be Jordan! Such a cool character!

    2. Zoe in Serenity (and, therefore, Firefly on TV): total badassedness, the height of female baddassadry, toughest of all tough chics. Oh, to be that fierce! (Also, to hang with Fillion.)

    3. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) in Star Trek (movies and TV). Because: STAR TREK!!! Do I really need to explain?

    4. Magenta (Patricia Quinn's character) in Rocky Horror Picture Show: Because I want to know what it feels like to be naughty, what it's like to dance on the dark side. Playing a role would be a safe way to experiment with debauchery.

    5. Sydney Ellen Wade in The American President. 1. To get to say Sorkin's writing. 2. Because she was very feminine, very confident, very smart, and very up for adventure.

    (P.S. Deb - Nora! Yay!)

    1. LOVE The American President! And it spawned The West Wing, one of my all time favourite TV shows. :D

    3. Me too! Josh was always my favourite (closely followed by C.J.). Fabulous show. And I watched Studio 60 too! It's such a shame that didn't get another season.

    8. I've got time warp stuck in my head now! I've dressed up as Janet, damnit. Oh how I miss Midnight Madness showings.

    9. 2 years at uni, I was a Transylvanian for the campus midnight Rocky Horror. One weekend (2 shows) every school year. After we cleaned the theater each night (sooo much rice!!!), we'd descend on Denny's at 2am. In costume. :)

The year I lived in Charlotte (ages 21-22), I was ONCE an emergency substitute Janet at the midnight theater, but I refused to go bra and slip. Just couldn't do it. Even if I had been thin and pretty (I so was not, even at that age), I wouldn't have been able to do that in public. I did it in a lightweight denim jumper. #modest #coward

Hey, Erin - I see you shiver with antici................

  8. Good list Madge! What "woman" do you mean in Guess Who's coming to dinner? Kate Hepburn or Katherine Houghton?

  9. Also, I'm happy people have begun cheating by dipping into TV:

    1. EMMA PEEL EMMA PEEL EMMA PEEL EMMA PEEL EMMA PEEL I want to be Emma Peel!!! (Diana Rigg in The Avengers) Because she was as close to perfect as a woman can be on Earth. Awesome, awesome, awesome!!!

    2. I'd want to be a Mythbuster like Kari Byron. Because: MYTHBUSTERS! Science! Fun! (And, Tory Belleci.)

    3. I'd want to be Caitlin O’Shannessy (Jean Bruce Scott's character) from Airwolf. Because: helicopters, espionage, and toughness

    4. One of the Doctor's companions – if I've got to choose, probably Donna (Catherine Tate's character) (It would have to be a companion to the 10th Doctor!)

    5. Janette (Deborah Duchene's character) on Forever Knight (in the 1st 2 seasons, not the 1 epi in season 3). Because: sexy, tough, fierce vampire with gorgeous wardrobe. Also, she got to make out with Nick. Janette was so cool, elegant, sexy, gorgeous, and dignified --- and she could rip your throat out.

    6. Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow's character) on Friends: What a fun way to go through life! Phoebe always had the best attitude. And, my all time favorite TV character wardrobe ever. I want to have all of Phoebe's clothes in real life!

    3. Lois Lane. Knight and shining armor at my disposal? Yes please
    4. Abby Lockhart from ER. She's one of my favorite characters in the show. She endures so many struggles from her family and her own personal demons. Yet she ends up in a stable relationship and has a beautiful baby boy :D

  19. Deb, I have to agree with you on Doris Day. I would take her role in any movie, especially if it involves Rock Hudson or Cary Grant. She was always so funny, strong, a needed-no-man business woman and yet, was always feminine and romantic.
#1 - Any of Doris Day's roles but my favorites would be either Carol in Lover Come Back or Kathy in That Touch of Mink.
#2 - Mame Dennis from Auntie Mame as played by Rosalind Russell. "You've got to live, live, LIVE! Life is a banquet and most poor folks are starving to death!"
#3 - Galadriel from Lord of the Rings. Drop dead beautiful, old and wise, powerful, respected, loved and possessing magical powers. And she is coming back for The Hobbit!
#4 - Mrs. Hannigan from Annie as played by Carol Burnnett. I know, she's a badie, but what a fun badie to be.
#5 - Wendy from Peter Pan. Flying about Never Never Land with Peter....

Rigel, love The Love Boat idea!

Good heavens! Carol Burnett, Tim Curry, and Bernadette Peters. Together. My brain explodes from joy! That much incredible talent together? How did the movie camera not melt from the sheer awesomeness?

  20. This is a bit harder than the other "5 crazy things"... THinking...
    1. Jane Austen (Anne Hathaway) in Becoming Jane. I am a huge Austen fan. And I love James McAvoy, so two of my favorite things!
    2. Elizabeth I (Cate Blanchett) in Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Love this monarch and would loved to have played her.
    3. Pocahontas (Q'orianka Kilcher) in The New World. Love this movie and the history. Such an amazing story.
    4. Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, any version of it. I love this novel. One of the best.
    5. Bond girl in any Bond movie with Daniel Craig as Bond. Yep.

  21. Eglantine Price in Bedknobs and Broomsticks

  22. Elle Woods in Legally Blonde

  23. Catherine Freneau in Father Goose

  24. I love them all you guys! This is fun! I will add Wendy to my own list. Thanks Molly!

  25. Morticia Addams in the The Addams Family (the TV show, not the movies)

  26. Mary Clancy in The Trouble With Angels

  27. Not a character, but a real person who was soooo cool on a very cool TV show: Magenta Devine hosting Rough Guide back in the 90's. I was enthralled!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ok, so this was harder than I thought. These are in no particular order:

    1. Barbara Spooner from Amazing Grace (If you haven't seen that movie I highly recommend you do). But anyway! She's so inspiring; she basically helps Wilberforce get his fire for the slave trade again. And they're cute together. :)

    2. Andy Sachs from The Devil Wears Prada. Yeah, she sort of loses sight of the important things for a while, but she learns a tough lesson in stride and totally walks away from a super powerful woman! Bam!

    3. Eowyn from Lord of the Rings. Hey, she gets to ride with Merry a good way and she defies women standards of that time and essentially kicks a lot of ass.

    4. Any of James' friends from "Third Star". Again...you have to see that movie. And yes, they are all dudes, but they share in a poignant and touching last request from their dying friend, and help him to carry out his wishes in a really beautiful and powerful way.

    5. Molly Hooper from Sherlock. True, she does take a lot of crap from Sherlock, but she's sort of like the brains behind the magic. Plus she's an insanely good friend to Sherlock and he's just too arrogant to notice.

    ReplyDelete
  29. HOLLY!!! I LOooooOOoooOOoooOOooVVVE Amazing Grace! Such a brilliant, passionate movie!!! I just sat there bawling my eyes out during the bagpipes at the end (me and half the theater lol)! And, yes, Barbara Spooner was so cool! So spunky!

I'm so glad they made a movie out of that true story. Needed to be told! Especially to the American audience!

p.s. How totally cute was his pet hare?!?

    OK, had to revisit this:

p.s. And, for all y'all Sherlock fans, Cumberbunny is in this movie. :)

  30. There are several female patients from "House" whose roles I'd have liked to play. "House" cast, hello?? Hugh Laurie, BIGGER HELLO?? But movies? Hmmmm...

    1. Julie Andre (Leslie Caron) in "Daddy Longlegs," with Fred Astaire. Being able to dance like that? With THE Fred Astaire?? Sign me up!!

    2. Though it's a small role, Dr. Laurel Weaver (Linda Fiorentino) from "Men In Black." I wanna be a bad ass coroner/alien hunter/destroyer. I mean, really, who doesn't?

    3. Princess Leia. (IV, V, VI) Harrison Ford. Sci fi. Action. Strong heroine. Harrison Ford. 'Nuff said.

    4. Kathy Greenwood, in the "Whose Line" era. On the "Whose Line" era. :D

    5. Margaret Houlihan. reely. I didn't like the movie version of M*A*S*H, and I wouldn't want Sally Kellerman's role. I do, however, covet Loretta Swit's.

I really can't come up with many movie roles off the top of my head, but the tv ones flow freely.

    2. OOH! I CAN finish 5 MOVIE roles:

      4. Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie) in "Tomb Raider." Bad ass, heavily armed chick. Bring it!

      5. Dorothy (Judy Garland),"Wizard of Oz." I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier!!

      Delete
    3. Love Lara Croft! She was my idol in my early teens.

  31. Geraldine Granger in Vicar of Dibley

    ReplyDelete
  32. Dawn! Margaret Houlihan! YES! I agree about not liking the movie one. And, I didn't like the early Margaret (all stuck up and Frank obsessed) in the TV series, but I totally grooved on how Swit evolved the character in the later seasons, esp. as her and Hawkeye's respectful yet still antagonistic relationship evolved. I liked the more mature Margaret.

Actually, when I asked about male characters earlier and, I guess, will come out in a later crazy things, Alan Alda's Hawkeye Pierce was way up there in the top 5. :)

p.s. Hugh Laurie? YES, PLEASE! Yum! Have you seen this? Too cute! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBQAuw4NYLA

I prefer him w/his real Brit accent instead of fake American. Fry and Laurie? Yes, please!

    BTW, beyond HILARIOUS!!!

    3. In the Annie Lennox video, he's totally playing his Prince Regent from Black Adder the Third! Classic! So funny!

Anyway, I love Britcoms. Vicar of Dibley, Black Adder (esp. III), and Are You Being Served? win for me. Thin Blue Line and Red Dwarf and Fry and Laurie also rock!

p.s. Dawn - Major gold star points to you if you know which Britcom has a link to this blog. :)

    4. A guy I used to know watched "Black Adder." That's as close to that show as I'll ever get. I've heard of "Are you being served?" but not the rest of the shows you're talking about. If I don't find something funny, I don't go looking for more of it.

  33. Trying not to repeat any and so many great ones are already listed!

1)Sarah from Labyrinth. Why? Three Words; Jim Henson muppetts.
2)Clarice Starling - Silence of the lambs
3)Annie Wilkes in Misery, one of my favorite books and I love Kathy Bates
4)Verna Jarrett from White Heat, I just think it would be fun to play a whiny gangsters girl. For those who don't know this movie (I'm guessing most) it's a James Cagney movie from the late 40's.
5)LeeLoo from Fifth Element. I know a bit of a fluff role/movie but something about it just sticks with me, oh and Gary oldman.

    3. Actually pretty close the song was inspired by the movie and the first spoken lines - a copper, a copper and we fell for it, treated him like my kid brother........is straight from Cagneys last big speech.

  34. This is a very interesting subject...

My picks for Female Role in a Movie:

    1. Baby from "Dirty Dancing" - I'm having a fangirl moment just typing this. Just to have been able to say, "Why, yes. Patrick Swayze did teach me to dance..." *swoon* And to be his "romantic interest". Squee!!!

    2. Sydney Ellen Wade from "The American President" - Yes, I want to be that confident - in all realms - and to be as erudite as Aaron Sorkin made her to be... Score!! :)

    3. Tracy Turnblad from "Hairspray" - Yes. I want to be that comfortable in my own skin, sing and dance, get the guy of my dreams *and* not giving a damn about making waves... she's just awesome!

    4. Sylvia Weis from "In Time" - Just to make the transition from being an overly protected daddy's girl to being a member of the "most wanted" duo in the land ... and Justin Timberlake is a bit of a perk. :)

My top picks for Female Role from TV:

    1. Officer Aeryn Sun from "Farscape" - The transition from being a hard-ass military officer where emotions are a liability to actually being compassionate (but still able to defend her ship as necessary) would be challenging to play. Ziva from "NCIS" falls into this category as well.

    2. Bo from "Lost Girl" - To play a succubus who didn't know she was a succubus ... and being confident and owning your sexuality... that would be fun!

    3. River Tam from "Firefly" - To play that level of crazy and then have moments of lucidity ... yeah. (If gender wasn't an issue - Stark from "Farscape" would fit into this category as well. He's one moment crazy, and the next moment, lucid... )

    4. Kaylee Fry from "Firefly" - Just to be strong, mechanically competent, and optimistic ... shiny!

    5. Buffy Summers from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" - Strong and loyal, but fallible. Awesome combinations... Heck, I'd be content to play any lead character written by Joss Whedon...

    6. Zhaan from "Farscape" - Just to be able to play that level of serenity is amazing.

  35. Abby from NCIS!!! :)

  36. Amy Farrah Fowler on Big Bang Theory

    Kaylee!

    SHINY!

  38. Carol Jordan in Wire in the Blood (first 3 seasons)

Oh, to be that steely, gritty, tough, strong, and assertive yet still feminine with a womanly heart!

Plus, to get to spend time with Robson Green? Yes, please! YUM (I have been ga-ga over Robson Green since Touching Evil in the late 90's!)

  39. Yes Buffy! Actually no. I hate being chased. Yep too scary. But Buffy when she is with angel? I'll take that!!!

    1. I don't like the being chased part of it, or even the chasing. But, if only I could have someone script my lines in RL to be like that of Buffy's... :)

    2. Yes! That's why Buffy was on MY list. ;)

  40. Uh...that's difficult.
I don't know why, but I don't really care about female roles. I only watch movies for the male roles...

but hey...if I can play a girl, who gets the hot guy...why not? :P

There are a few female characters I like, though.

    1. Luna Lovegood - Harry Potter (because she's strange and weird and lovely)

    2. Dna Scully - The X-Files (yup, that's movie. Actually two movies. She's pretty, and she rocks, and she loves Mulder :P)

    Hmm...

    3. Satine - Moulin Rouge (but only because this is one of my favourite movies, and although she dies...she made love to Ewan McGregor :D)

    4. Bethany - Dogma (beacuse I like this movie, and she saves the world...that would be cool :D)

    5. I don't know... maybe some random hobbit in LotR :P

  41. I love 5 things!!!!

    ok here is my list
    1. BatGirl!!! Played by Alicia Silversteen (<----spelling??) In Batman and Robin. the one where George Clooney played Batman. I know that was considered the worst Batman movie but its my favorite : )
    2. ...Penny. I think that is the name of the little girl in the inspector gadget movies.
    3. Princess Leia. Who wouldn't want to be in Star Wars??
    4. The girl in Beetle Juice. I forget her name in the movie and in real life but she is the one who lets BeetleJuice out! BeetleJuice, BeetleJuice, BeetleJuice!!
    5. I am cheating on #5 and crossing gender lines. I wanna be Tom Hanks in Cast Away!!! WILSON!!!!!!!!!

    1. Winona Ryder played the girl in Beetlejuice. Great film! :)

    2. My favorite Winona Ryder movie = Heathers
But, I wouldn't want to be ANY of those female characters! 2 of the Heathers were hateful bitches, one Heather was far too weak, and Veronica went along with murder. Ugh!

    3. Hehe I love those batman movies, although I'm no big fan if batgirl. I am a Robin girl :D

  45. Had to really think about this one.

    1. When I was younger I could have been the perfect Laura Ingalls
    2. Mary Poppins-I know all the songs by heart
    3. Robert Redford's co-star in the Electric Horseman or The Way We Were
    4. Tom Selleck's co star in Her Alibi
    5. I always wanted to do a western especially Bonanza as a Cartwright wife but then I would have to have been killed off : (

Just a fantasy I really wanted to get sung to at the Whose Live show with Jeff and Chip but I didn't get picked. Here's hoping Brad and Colin pick me on the 14th haha.

    1. I so have the same fantasy of being sang to be Jeff and Chip!! They are really talented and so sweet when meeting them. I have seen them twice and wished wished wished I would be picked, but no such luck. Going to see them for my birthday soon, though, so I am wishing again...
Hope you get picked by Colin and Brad on the 14th!

  47. None of these, except one, are starring roles, but I always did tend favor whacky side characters more anyhow.

    1. Hawkeye Pierce (M*A*S*H)
    2. Audry Horne (Twin Peaks)
    3. Harley Quinn (Batman: The Animated Series)
    4. Paris Geller (Gilmore Girls)
    5. Lt. Commander Data (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

  48. These are in no particular:

    1. Jeannine Pratt from "Ordinary People". It's my all-time favorite movie, and she's a very real character to me. She doesn't push Conrad to tell her everything, though she does want to help him/to understand. She likes him for who he is, flaws and demons and all.

    2. Catherine from "Proof". My favorite character from one of my favorite plays. She's guarded, but with good reasons. She's snarky, but you know she cares. She's very complex, and she's better at math than I will ever be.

    3. Sister James from "Doubt". Sister Aloysius may be the juicier part, but there's something very compelling in Sister James's steadfast belief that nothing wrong was done. Sme may call her a wide-eyed innocent or naive, but she's a very good person and wants to believe the best of everyone. And those moments where she comes off as her superior...she's not comfortable in that skin, and you know it. There's nothing wrong with being an optimist. And I admire that (not being much of one myself).

    4. Mrs. Muir from "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir". I want a snarky, tension=filled friendship-maybe-more with a dashing Rex Harrison ghost man. :)

    5. Beatrice from "Much Ado About Nothing." Again, for the snark-filled romance.

  49. Okay, here goes...

    1. Kate Beckett in "Castle" -love her, and of course my future ex husband Nathan Fillion. meOW.
    2. Laura Croft, Tomb Raider - So self assured, so tough.
    3. Mrs. Anna from "The King and I" - who wouldn't want to dance around with Yul Brenner! He was gorgeous, and wasn't Rita Moreno so very young in it.
    4. Emma, "The Accidental Husband" - Noodling with Colin Firth AND Jeffrey Dean Morgan in the same movie? Oh HELL to the YA baby. :D
    5. Terry McKay, "An Affair to Remember" - falling in love with Nicky Ferrante (aka Cary Grant) on a cruise ship... *sigh*

    Honorable mention:
Holly in "P.S., I love you" -- Hunky overload with Gerard Butler, Harry Connick Jr., and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Plus, who wouldn't want to be pals with Lisa Kudrow and Gina Gershon, and have Kathy Bates for a mom? Sign me up.

Pardon me, I must now go take an ice bath.

  50. OHHHHH I LoVe this! I'll do my best to keep it at Five. BUT OMG this is HARD for me!!!

Elizabeth Taylor in “Cleopatra” & “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf”. Because I identify most with Elizabeth Taylor.
All my life I have been told I look like Elizabeth Taylor.
    She is Aquarius like me.
She falls in LoVe easily, or gets board, or doesn't tolerate much when it comes to LoVe. (Married 8 times)
And she is named one of the Greatest American Screen Legends of all times.

Marilyn Monroe in whatever! Playing the sexy dumb blond is something she mastered. And I LoVe it! From her head, to her toes, she had it down. I have never been able to master it. It just doesn't suit me at all! LOL. She is one of the greatest female stars of all time.

Audrey Tautou In “Amelie”. Because the movie is magical. And it’s about doing good for others, and LoVe. Sign me up for that!

Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman”. Because I can play that role in my sleep! I know every line. Watched it a million times. It was all I had (as a go~to DVD) until Sex and the City came out. Kim Cattrall (Samantha) became my new “thank you for being me” gal! Now it’s Christina Hendricks, on “Mad Men.”

Marion Cotillard in “La Vie en Rose”. If you haven’t seen it, you must. It is perfection… in my opinion.

And I know you said 5, but I MUST add my all time favorite Movie to this list… Mine and Brads wedding video. When I watch it I truly see the perfect Love story. And LUCKY ME, I’m living the role of a lifetime!

  51. I love the last one Sean'a not many of us can say that. We should all be happy in the roles of being ourselves. I think it's because most of us are not that we get so caught up in many of these movies roles. From now I shall strive to be happy playing myself. 52. Ahhh, I just wrote a long comment about how amazing all these lists are and it DIDN'T POST!!! (arggggh)

I wanted to give a special mention to the last posters here (Becki, Mary, Julia, Simone, Karen, Sean'a) because these are way beautiful. Seana's last film is my FAVOURITE :)

Mary, I think we were posting at the same time (maybe that's why there was a hiccup - I wonder if that can happen) and I want to second your sentiment. PS I also want to send some hugs your way -- I got your comment on my email about the friends after 50 and wanted to commiserate (don't know exactly where it is anymore). I totally agree with Kate, you can truly make this difference at any point in your life. But, I think, there just has to be some effort in that regard and then some patience. You are so amazing, I'm sure there are plenty of women who would just eat you up!!!

That was so sweet thank you XO. I just love what Sean'a said it made me think and I realized that's who I want to be. I kept saying I feel silly being in college at this age and starting over. That I'm gonna do it because I want my kids to be proud of me. But I realize now that I want "me" to be proud of me too. I don't know if that makes any sense but I totally want to change my attitude about where I am in my life now. I am always thankful for support and I have to create a mantra in my head that I can do this and I can be successful.

    1. Everything you say makes soooo much sense, Mary. I completely hear you, having gone through a similar shift in my late 30s. It does take time, but the journey is fascinating. Mistakes happen, sometimes a promising friendship turns out to suck, but soooo much amazing stuff comes out of that process of opening yourself up and exploring and asking questions and being curious. You are so on the right path, I see a grand outcome :) love xoxo

  55. Thank you Sean'a I have tears but they are good tears. There's so much I wish I could explain and I don't know why I feel the need to. The only thing I ever read that touched me as deeply was Desiderata. I have that is hanging on my wall. This I am putting in with my pictures in my purse. This was just so lovely! I'm behind, lol, and catching up so this probably won't get to any of you, but it was incredible reading through (ok, skimming, this brought out the best in everyone, which makes it hard to go through days later!)

I love how this showed the value, the genuine, *necessary* value of movies/tv/staged presenations of stories in any way; look how much it allows us to explore ourselves and our imaginations. love love love.

As for my list, this is a list I caress daily, like a favourite pet...

    1. Martha, from Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" I read that play for the first time in high school, and it was great because there was no teacher to ruin any of it for me. I was riveted. I was gutted. I was in shock and tears at the end. Reading the play was so lasting, that I can't say the movie version with Elizabeth Taylor really did it for me, but I have always wanted to be able to play that role.

    2. Amelie in "Amelie". This is one of my top three favourite movies (not that I can truly pick three, but this would be up there) It was one of the first times I cried during a movie, simply cause it was so great, and I was so happy. Ugh. I'd have loved to be a part of that project in any way.

    3. Louise/Gypsy Rose Lee in "Gypsy". Just so I can wear a fabulous burlesque gown(s!!!) and sing 'Let Me Entertain You' while doing a sassy burlesque tease. With a fan. Siiiiiiiiiiiigh.

    4. Sydney Brostow in "Alias" for the whole ass-kicking business.

    5. This is gonna be my cheat because I don't wish I was in it, but I wish I had written it: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The first time I saw it I sat there going "But. But. BUT THOSE WERE MY IDEAS GET OUT OF MY HEAD". Ugh. It was just so awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Oh, EXCELLENT thoughtful list, Souzan! Soooo rich! Eternal Sunshine is brilliant, isn't it. Doesn't mean you can't make your own version of it :)
