Not Singin’ The Second Time Blues

Deb: In the theatre there is an expression: “second time blues”. Maybe it isn’t just a theatre thing, but the concept is that the night after an opening night, is always the worst night to go and see a show, for any number of reasons. But it can apply to anything, I guess.

So when we came back up to the beach house this year, I wondered if we would suffer the dreaded “second time blues”. You know that friggin’ thing. We have all done it. How often do we try to recreate a moment or event? It is a painful and challenging journey, isn’t it? Nothing sadder than watching yourself trying to have fun. Trying trying trying! Forced laughter, making it new. Woo..............Hoo.

Happy to report that no such thing has occurred for us on this, our second year at the beach. The things that were great are still great and we are finding a different and familiar rhythm this time. We’re mixin’ in up, mixin’ up the fun. We have put a few new “games” in this trip, one of which I will report on next week, complete with photos. Even the spotty internet which is making my Olympic watching a challenge, is not dampening my spirit. I catch what I can when I can catch it. As we do our beach walks this year, I have found, each of the days, a heart-shaped stone. I have collected three of them. I have for years collected rocks from places we travel and put them in a bowl beside my bed. What can I say? I’m a rock fan.

The big difference for me this year is my new camera. Our friend Greg, one half of the couple we share this trip with, has a wonderful camera, the photos from which I shared last year on the blog. Well, didn’t I covet that camera all year, wanting to click click click like a pro! How else could I take close-up shots of random flowers!  So my lovely husband bought me the camera for my birthday and, while I am just getting to know my new friend, I will share with you some shots of the first few days of Beach House 2012! Forgive me this brevity-bloggie please. I am chillin’ with the ice cubes.

No Second Time Blues for us.

Barbara: I do know what you mean, Deb! Sad but true, it can happen. Just so glad to hear that this is not the case for you and the Beach House gang. You all sooooo deserve the break and the rest and the quiet. Also, very excited your new camera is proving every bit as exciting and interesting as you imagined it would. These pix are just BEAUTIFUL!

  5. Glad to see you've retained your favorite seat! Beautiful pictures it looks very peaceful. I don't thing there is anything else in the world quite as great or relaxing as beach life. I wish I took better pictures more often. We have a good camera but after the initial burst of great pictures we rarely seem to remember to use it or else it just seems easier to grab my small camera.

i am enjoying looking at your brilliant pictures deb . i am glad to see you and Colin are having a nice time in such a beautiful place .

brilliant idea of Colin to give you a camera . as i am sure you know it is great to be able to look back on your pictures and be reminded of good times . i have had a digital camera for the last 11 years ( not the same one all the time though ) and i love taking pictures of what i see every day . i find though that in the 3 month since i got a new mobile phone with a camera in it i am using my phone to take pictures more then my camera . my phone is much easier to carry .

  16. Deb -

I'm glad you are having a much needed, much deserved fun, relaxing time. Where you are looks so pretty! Yay for your new camera! I'm jealous. ;) What is the make and model of the camera? Looks like you're already getting the hang of the macro lens. :)

Colin is the maximum extremes of sweet and adorable.

  17. Love Love the pics! I got a new camera about a year ago and I am still experimenting with it. These are the type of photos I love to take too. Capturing a flower with morning dew as the sun rises is something that is absolutely amazing.
Hope you all continue to have a wonderful time at the Beach House!

We live very close to the beach ( as close as 20 min!) and are always there during the summer! <3 We go for day trips or stay in a hotel but I have never stayed in a house by the beach. It sounds lovely : ) and your pictures are beautiful as well : )

  22. Ok< I figured it out.....I will try again....Deb, once again thank you for such a real post. We all think that way when we go back to a place we love..."will it be as good as it was?" You are a different person than you were last year, so no, I think It will be better....and just what you need....You are finding hearts on the beach, and you gave your heart away so many times this past year...to your family...to your friends....to the blog...to your dogs...You are just that way, I think from meeting you....you are a "giver". And, so now, the beach, and the universe, is giving back to you....hearts!!! OMG what do you need...a mac truck!!!!...this holiday will be wonderful and you do not need to worry my darling. YOU are being taken care of for a change....go for it Deb!! Get BOTH feet wet!!!! xo
