Five Crazy Things: Alternate Lives

In our continuing theme of “Five Crazy Things”, the topic for today might be a bit “crazier” than our “Places” post on Tuesday.

What would you do if you had five alternate lives to live (and present-day proclivity, aptitude, and talent have NO BEARING)?

Barbara:
1. Archeologist
2. Ballerina
3. Marine Biologist
4: Antique/Rare Book Restorer
5: Sherpa Guide (without any actual schlepping…)

Deb:
1.  Architect
2.  Broadway singing dancing star
3.  Interior designer
4.  Physiotherapist for seniors
5.  Independently wealthy

Now tell us yours!

    3. oh Shalaka I have only seen 1 episode of doctor who but I vow to sit down and watch more soon!
Rigel..they just took her back for surgery. She went to the eye doc yesterday for what we thought was just a normal visit but ended up needing surgery asap. Her retina somehow detached. not a good situation. They siad w/o surgery today she would lose her vision in that eye completely within a month or so. Docs say that she has a good chance of recovery, but still surgery is never fun. But she will get an eye patch when this is over so I can call her pirate for a few days : ).

    4. Aww I hope your mom gets well soon hon... We are all praying here! :)

    6. thanks for the thoughts guys. I am a nervous wreck sitting here waiting all day. Doc said she made it through the surgery fine and they fixed the problem. She was stil asleep when he updated us but said she should be waking up within about 40 min. It has been over an hour now so I am gonna go back to being worried sick. Really appreciate the care you guys : )

    8. whew. home at last. loved reading the comments over and over today. mom is now sleeping. who knew being put to sleep for a little while made one so sleepy? My mom had never had surgery before this so it really scared me to see her after surgery. She was still a little groggy from the sedation but man that made me feel so scared and bad to her like that all bandaged up. so thanks for letting me talk to some people here : ) you guys made the day a bit easier for sure : )

    9. Oh my goodness Kelly I just now got back to my computer and I saw this. I am so glad she is out of surgery and recovering. What a day for you Kelly! And your Mom. I wish her a speedy recovery. I hope you are feeling tired and better tonight. Sleep well.

    10. Thanks Deb. I will pass along everyone's well wishes once my mom is awake enough. I agree, what a eventful 48hrs it has been here on the home front. We have more follow up doc appointments in the comming weeks but after that things should slow down and go back to normal again :)
      Off to bed now.
      thanks again guys <3

    11. Just reading this on my way home (at the airport). Kelly, I am thinking of your mom and hoping the recovery continues well! A retinal detachment is one of those ultimate scares for me. Maybe because I've always had these weird issues with my eyes and it makes me realize how vulnerable they are (can be) and how quickly your physical condition -- and reality -- can change. Thanks for keeping us posted re the surgery. Much love to you!!

  20. I thought of another. Actually, it's one I've been thinking about for a couple of months and recently mentioned to my best friend. Now, I've just got to type this out without ending up crying.

I miss, so very much miss, being a part of the homeschooling community. It's not just that I miss homeschooling Eddie. He and I both still very much grieve that loss. Beyond destroying our family, taking homeschooling from us was one of the cruelest things his father has ever done.

But, I also miss being a part of that network of parents and kids -- that larger community, family. (FWIW, the first time I was ever published was an article in a homeschooling magazine!) I miss the annual convention in Searcy. I miss the field trip groups. I miss the volunteering groups (e.g. homeschool children helping with bingo games at one of the local nursing homes). I miss being a part of this larger pro-child, especially pro-special-needs-child (e.g. autistic little boys!) homeschooling movement.

I still give lots of handmedown books, etc. to homeschooling families I know. I occasionally help an aggravated mom by helping a child with a pesky math lesson. And, when dangerous legislation comes up in Little Rock, I still call and write to lobby pro-homeschooling. But, it's not the same.

I'd like to somehow be a part of the homeschooling community again, even as an impending empty nester. I wish I could write homeschooling science units, have a homeschoolers' science daycamp, or something like this. When Eddie was little, I taught a weekly hands-on homeschoolers' science class for area children of all ages.

But, the curriculum and science kit market for homeschoolers is already so saturated. I think where it's lacking is that so many of the specialty catalogs containing science curricula and experimentation kits are Fundamentalist Christian oriented. For example, our favorite catalog when Eddie was little ( http://www.hometrainingtools.com/Default.asp?eid=SEM11072&gclid=CO-fguOJ4LACFYpgTAodhmep1A ) is markedly, outspokenly Young Earth and Creationist oriented. It took careful skimming to arrive at science w/o religious slant. I am a Christian, but I am not a creationist, for example. (I'm more an intelligent design chic -- I've got no problem with evolution in general (although, I do think science has a lot more work to do in the field to firm up some serious gaps and quandaries), but I do think someone's driving this bus (e.g. set up the laws of physics) ). I'm a mainstream, social justice oriented, dirt under my fingernails, eensy bit radical and growing moreso as I age, loud, blue jeans in the sanctuary Protestant. I'm not so distant as a Deist, but you'll certainly never find me joining the AFA! ;)

So, I want to add to my alternate reality list an entry that I'd like to find a role in which I can still contribute to the homeschooling community. Two education subjects of particular interest to me to convey are hands-on elementary school science and middle school and high school level comparative religion (education not to diminish someone's beliefs but to increase their understanding and reduce the festering of hate).

Well. Proud of me. Only choked up and had a wave of weariness descend over me. No sobbing. No plummet to pit. Cool. I'm a tough chic today.

He's like a year and half older than me. He needs a more mature woman with my, ahem, skill set. ;) You can take one of the youngins and break him in!

So torn! So uselessly in a lusty quandary! So frustrated!

I might as well be 13 again with MacGyver posters taped up all over my closet door. I'm getting the same amount of sex. *pissy snarl*

    5. OK. I've come to a conclusion. Tory is in 1st place, Nathan in 2nd. Because Tory is a Christian and has done mission work in Haiti. Add in the science factor, and he qualifies for tremendous amounts of extra warm fuzzies (ok, and lust -- Raw. Geek. Lust.). Anyway, Tory has extra YAY! in his favor.

I know this seems selfish. But, truly, truly, I just want this kind of spirit in my life. I want to belong. Please. I need to fit.

  44. Oh my god, you guys are AWESOME!!!! What spirit and imagination. Just thrilled that we decided to do this. You know what I really love? The contradictions in most people's alternate lives. One dream life will be extrovert, another introvert. One city/people/glamour centric, the other quiet/green/contemplative. So so so interesting. And, okay, so many of you made me laugh with your alternate choices: Oprah's raw food chef, Fran? Love that. And all you lusty young maidens? So cute.
