  2. So yeah...I am not familiar with Gilda Radner but I heard about this on the news last night and I thought it was absolutely ridiculous to remove her own name from her own charity just because people don't know who she is! Ridiculous!

    Also says petition is closed.

  3. Thanks Holly. Weird about the petition. Hopefully it's because there has been enough outrage that they have shelved the idea of dumping Gilda's name!

  4. Her name is part of the organization that started a movement. It should stay.

  5. Petition is closed for a redo. There is no mandate to change all the clubs names. They are making a new petition to come soon. SO they say when you read about the petition and why it closed.

  6. Thanks for that info Madge. I wonder if they have gotten negative feedback and decided to keep it the way it is? I was thinking when this came up, about our Toronto Airport called "The Lester B. Pearson" airport and I thought to myself if I walked up to 100 people under 20 they would not know who I was talking about. And yet...you don't just change it!!! Holy Moly!

  8. It's an interesting dilemma for the organization, to be sure. On the one hand, being recognizable to a larger audience by having a descriptive name. On the other hand, honouring their namesake and sharing her story with the next generation. I agree that changing the name to appeal to the lowest common denominator is objectionable, and it's a step toward Colin's joking slippery slope argument. But I can still see the reasoning behind the organization's wish to do so, even if I disagree.

  9. Petition is closed, otherwise would definitely have signed it.

What a load of crap!! I think it's SO disrespectful, I can't even begin to understand the reasoning behind it. And no, I didn't know who Gilda was, but I looked it up. Because that's the great thing about all these "young people who are born after Gilda's time": they all know how to use Google to find information about something they're not familiar with!

By the way...who IS Lester B. Pearson? *googles*

  10. i admit being Irish i did'nt really know much about Gilda Radner ( the only things i knew was that she was married to gene wilder and the fact of her sad passing from cancer ) or Gilda's club . i got myself onto yahoo and now know more then i did when i first came here tonight . it looks am amazing charity . no way should it have it;s name changed . if they want to change the name why not change it to Gilda's Cancer Support Community , at least leave her name in there . if people don;t know who she is and can;t be bothered looking it up that not the fault of the charity

  11. I don't understand the reasoning behind changing the name. If it was because people didn't know who she was, wouldn't it be better to take the oppertunity to educate them when they ask? I admit I have no idea who Gilda is but I am glad I too the time to read up and can now look into her stuff. Anyone who was on SNL has got to be funny! : )

  12. Shows how much attention I've been paying lately. I didn't know anything about this till you posted it today. They need to leave it alone, end of story. And that's literally all I have to say about that.

  13. I read "It's Always Something," written by Gilda. It was her autobiography but focused strongly on her battle with ovarian cancer. It's a very personal story, an intimate one I'm not sure many cancer patients would want to share, never mind celebrity cancer patients. She greatly emphasized her support system, including her husband, Gene Wilder, and various friends from childhood and adulthood.
She spoke often of Joanna Bull, who founded what was to be later named "Gilda's Club." It was originally a support club, for patients and families to talk and share with each other the feelings, the emotions of living with the disease, and of living with someone who's going through treatment of it. Changing the name from Gilda's Club to Cancer Support Community, REGARDLESS of who "Gilda" is, takes away from the "personalness" of it and gives it a much more sterile, uncaring "this is the next step in your cancer treatment" feel.
The person with the idea of the name change is surely not someone living with its effects daily. If so, the argument would be non-existent, because it would be understood that Gilda's Club is about PEOPLE, not PATIENTS.

I am honestly struck dumb that the organization would do this. Everything has already been said, so really all I can do is agree, but that is so...wrong.
