My Favourite Summ’a Movie Recommendations

Deb: As the heat continues, why not relax in the evening (after the mosquitos have come out) and enjoy some summ’a cinema fare? I have some all time favourites that I will share in the coming weeks. Here are the first two:

A Summer Place. One of my Favourites.

The Parent Trap. The original starring Haley Mills.

And the update with Li-lo is good too!

Barbara: My girls routinely hang a white bedsheet outside (either in our backyard or on our porch if the weather is iffy) and project movies through Netflix or DVD onto the sheet. They invite friends over and eat popcorn during their “sit-out movie”.

Last flick?  Bye Bye Birdie.

    1. Wonderful films! Yes Doris Day of course. I guess my problem with this post is that I was not clear. I meant-summer movies-movies set during summer. Sorry for the confusion. All these are great!

  2. Summer fluffy viewing fare from my all-time favorite movies list:
Real Genius, Ghostbusters, Legally Blonde, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Breakfast at Tiffany's, My Man Godfrey

    Other fluffy fun:
Overboard, Wife vs. Secretary, Short Circuit, Hackers

  3. Amityville horror (with ryan renolds), Saw (part one not the others), Ring (US and original), The Orphanage and and and *thinking very hardly*. Wierdly enough The Skeleton Key. It wasn't that good but the after thoughts were wonderful. The Happening, the Funny Games (both US and original) and children of the corn. I can remember watching the children of the corn when I was a kid :) OH and Resident evil (not so much horror but entertaiing) and 28 days later!

I am yet to see Paranormal activity 1-3. I am a bit hesitant to watch them as I have heard so much good about them. So I do not want to be dissapointed. A cabin in the woods is the same. I would like to go see it, but I don't want to be dissapointed.

Me and my friend have done a Freddy marathon and have started on Halloween marathon. After that I think the next one will be of Jason, but we are not that big fans of those films. Freddy is more to our likeing.

    1. I adore the "Freddy" franchise. The first one really draws you in as horror movies can do. However, the mood changes drastically from the second one on. You know something is wrong when you start cheering for the horror character. :) But they're worth watching, at least the first time around.

    2. Oh yes! I agree with you Dawn. We had to watch the Freddy saga again when we got our hands on uncut versions. They had cut out all the good bits from the original releases. Good fun to watch them as they bring back memories. :)

Becki: yay, I am not the only one who is a horror movie fan! :)

  4. I've only seen the parent trap with Lindsay Lohan. It was ok. I haven't really seen a lot of movies this summer. Actually my roommate got me hooked on the LOTR trilogy. SUPER addicting!!! :D

  8. Ah, the original Parent Trap! Now that brings back memories... :D

I'm currently reading all of the Harry Potter books to my girls, and we're watching each film afterwards. It'll probably take us til the end of the year, but I'm loving it! Apart from that, I love the ageless, feel good movies like The Goonies and The Princess Bride. Actually, I love too many movies to count!

    2. Spooky! So are we! We're nearing the end now. I've read all the books and seen all the films before, but it's interesting to live through them again with my children. They're loving it. :)

  9. I'm not a big movie person. When I do find something I like, I tend to watch it over and over again. So either I haven't seen the movie, or I know it by heart.

Jaws I and II (over and over again). Loves me a New England shark movie.

I love "Stripes" and "Caddyshack" but I don't own them. They're happy surprises when I come across them on a lazy Saturday afternoon.

Men in Black is always a winner.

I LOVE cheesy B-level horror movies. I grew up on the Godzilla movies and Rodan. SyFy network is making new movies along the lines of "Mega Python vs. Gatoroid" starring Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. Piranha I and II. (They even remade Piranha. Really??? At least the Godzilla remake was decent. Very good, in fact.) MegaShark vs. Giant Octopus. (The special effects are... whoa. *I* could probably do better.)
These are so bad they're funny. I love brain junk food like this. SO much fun on a hot afternoon or night when my brain feels like it's melting, anyway.

  11. I don't know these old movies (maybe because I'm German?)...but I used to watch some classic german movies with my grandma...

    Well, I would recommend:

    Moulin Rouge (Ewan McGregor ♥)

Dogma (Alan Rickman :P and funny)

    Memento (love it)

Silent Hill (because I love horror movies, and I'm a big fan of the video games)

    Interview with the Vampire (vaaaaampires!)

As it is in Heaven (beautiful movie about music and love...you HAVE to watch that!)

    Brokeback Mountain (just because)

and German movies (there are no English versions I guess, but I post them anyway)

bandits (a movie about four female prisoners, who play in a band...break out of jail, become famous, try to enjoy living, and avoid being captured by the police)

Der Schuh des Manitu - Manitu's Shoe (from one of the most famous german comedians...it's soooo funny) -

Das Wunder von Bern - The Miracle of Bern (Soccer World Cup in 1954, which Germany won. A story about a soccer team and a family)

    4. It's a Wonderful Life- Classic
    5. Timeline- based on a novel by Michael Chrichton, author of Jurassic Park.

  13. I love this post, I remember the Parent Trap with Haley Mills. Was amazed when I was older and realized they weren't really twins but the role was played by one person. My favorite summer movie to this day is On Golden Pond have always loved Katharine Hepburn! When my kids were little they loved to watch Mary Poppins and Muppet Treasure Island and also Meatballs with Bill Murray. That one still makes me smile! I love hanging the sheet outside idea Barb would love to do that some day with Mariella when she's a little older!

  15. I didn't include this in my last list because it didn't seem like summer fluff. But, my tied for 1st place (alongside Real Genius and Ghostbusters) movie is Seve Samurai from Akira Kurosawa. I love, love, love, love, love that movie. If you have a lazy summer afternoon, perhaps it's storming and you can't be outside, settle in for 3 very worthwhile hours of subtitles.

My favorite of the 7 is Kyuzo.

  16. Oh, and more summer fluffy viewing:

    Despicable Me

    I <3 The Minions!

  20. I don't know about movies set in summer, but my favorite movies in general are the Muppet movies. The first one is my favorite movie of all time, and who doesn't love to see Kermit with his banjo singing "Rainbow Connection"?

And I saw Colin on the Late Late Show. It...was...awesome! He and Craig had me laughing so much, I almost woke everyone else up. Hooray for Colin! :)
